Numba Activity Newsletter, May 2024

May 2024: Editor for this month is @sklam

NumPy 2.0 is coming this weekend

NumPy 2.0 release date is June 16. There will be breaking changes. We are planning to release Numba 0.60.0, which has ABI-compatibility for NumPy 1.x and 2.x, before then.

What happened:

  • We are resolving the last issues for the 0.60.0 release and expect to finish soon. (As of publishing this newsletter, all issues are resolved and we are doing the final CI testing.)
  • @kc611 is investigating reporting LLVM optimization remarks in Numba’s annotation tools.
  • @gmarkall and @yashssh continue to work on LLVM upgrade in llvmlite.
  • PIXIE: @stuartarchibald continues work on the ISA-specific dispatch. A minimal working version of PIXIE is proposed in pixie#21.

Meeting/FPOC schedule for this month (May 2024):

  • Office hours: 2024-06-11, 2024-06-18, 2024-06-25
  • FPOC (first port of call) duty rota, this is the maintainer who will respond to tickets/issues/PRs during the noted week and run the office hours/public meeting at the end of the week:
