May 2024: Editor for this month is @sklam
NumPy 2.0 is coming this weekend
NumPy 2.0 release date is June 16. There will be breaking changes. We are planning to release Numba 0.60.0, which has ABI-compatibility for NumPy 1.x and 2.x, before then.
What happened:
- The Numba 0.60.0 release has been blocked by several issues. (All issues are resolved as of publishing this newsletter.) We have spent significant time working to resolve them:
- We discovered an incompatibility between the Anaconda-shipped MKL-accelerated NumPy and SciPy-wheel versions that is only fixed in SciPy 1.14. (See discussion)
- Our testing against the NumPy 2.0 RC missed some late API changes. (numba#9599 and numba#9598)
- Users reported a non-deterministic bug that we have only partially resolved. numba#9581
- Users reported issues with incorrect CPU feature detection in some virtualized environments. numba#9582
- Meta gifted LLVM 17 upgrade PR (llvmlite#1042).
- Numba-rvsdg: @esc completed the Structured Control Flow Graph to Python AST converter in the numba-rvsdg package. @sklam put together a simple backend to demonstrate the capability.
- @sklam provided an update on the AOT compiler development status
- @esc and @kc611 added automation and infrastructure for the PIXIE project.
Ongoing:
- We are resolving the last issues for the 0.60.0 release and expect to finish soon. (As of publishing this newsletter, all issues are resolved and we are doing the final CI testing.)
- @kc611 is investigating reporting LLVM optimization remarks in Numba’s annotation tools.
- @gmarkall and @yashssh continue to work on LLVM upgrade in llvmlite.
- PIXIE: @stuartarchibald continues work on the ISA-specific dispatch. A minimal working version of PIXIE is proposed in pixie#21.
